Everybody loves a To Do list – like something we can actually accomplish. I often go to webinars and leave thinking, “That’s a good concept, but what do I do with it?” We’re starting this series off right with a checklist… a list of things you can and should do between now and the beginning of the year to ensure your child’s transition back to school and school year are successful!
You know you want good goals on the IEP, right? I’m about to blow your mind. Behind every good goal is a good Present Level, and behind every PL is a good and well understood evaluation report. Yes, that’s right, you actually have to read those babies. A solid evaluation is the foundation for an IEP that addresses a child’s needs by capitalizing on the child’s strengths. In Week 2 I’ll help you read that darn evaluation report. Heck, you may even be excited when the next one hits your Inbox!
Even if you’ve been “in” the special education world for many years, you probably still get stumped within the IEP document from time to time. There are so many nuances; and in order to fully support the child, the different parts of the document should dance a beautiful dance. In Week 3 I’ll walk you through the parts of the IEP document and give you insight into how you might get more – or even less- out of the IEP by utilizing the document to your student’s advantage.
Communication is the name of the game over here at Ashley Barlow Co. I could go on and on about the importance of frequent, effective communication within the IEP team (well, I do), and starting the year off with specific, directed communication is a no-brainer. In Week 4 I’ll give you several things that you should communicate to your child’s IEP team, along with strategies for communicating them!
