A Future Planning Statement (FPS), sometimes also called a Parent Interest Statement, is simply something that parents submit before an IEP meeting. Some states require them, some states suggest them , and some states fail to reference them at all. Regardless, parents should consider submitting a statement before every IEP meeting. At the majority of meetings, the school team has prepared a draft of the IEP, which can be incredibly helpful and efficient. A Future Planning Statement allows the parents to submit an informative statement regarding their long-term and short-term hopes, dreams, and plans for the child . It’s hard to focus on the present without some foresight and insight from the parents. If states do not mandate documents like this, parents can make sure they are a part of the record by asking that they are referenced in the prior written notice, conference summary, or meeting minutes.
